The Significant Entries section of The Eclipse File provides details on horses who have been entered in group and pattern races on the flat and graded races over jumps. This information is provided both prior to and after the race(s) in question and provides a clear indication as to how highly connections regard an individual, or what they had previously thought the individual may have been capable of. The majority of these races have various stages of entry, known as forfeits, each of these is identified by a number after the name of the race, for example Derby 1 (first forfeit), Derby 2 (second forfeit) and so on. This section has become extremely useful for assessing connections' opinion of the relative merits of unraced horses in particular and is invaluable for Trainers seeking to find the best option for his/her own unraced maiden, for instance.

This information may be accessed by clicking on the 'Significant Entries' button within the members' enclosure. When doing so, a grid will be displayed, (as with Gallops and Notebook entries) as shown below...

If a horse icon appears under significant entries in any given race, this indicates that one or more runners in that race hold, or held, significant entries. To investigate this further, simply click on the horse icon in the race you are interested in and the following screen will be displayed...

We have found the significant entries information to be an extremely useful tool, in that it clearly provides an insight into connections' opinion of their horse. Of course, some trainers use a scattergun approach and enter most of their horse in races they are extremely unlikely to take part in. However, more often than not and by identifying those trainers who are more selective in entering horse for big races, users can clearly identify well regarded runners.
