the Hollywood of race horses. There is no other town anywhere in the world that has racing so deeply ingrained in its fabric as Newmarket. The town is quite simply given over, virtually in its entirety to racing. There are two racecourses in Newmarket. The July Course as the name implies is used for racing in the high summer, with the Rowley Mile staging the Classic races, the One Thousand and Two Thousand Guineas, in the spring and the major meetings in the autumn. 
The Rowley Mile has recently under gone a radical transformation with the construction of the Millennium Grandstand (see above) which was opened by the Queen in May 2000. This facility sets the standard for other racecourses to aim at, and certainly compares very favourably with the facilities that existed previously 
Situated in the extreme western side of Suffolk, adjoining the County of Cambridgeshire and near to the Isle of Ely. Newmarket is directly reached by road and is on the A11 from London, the A142 from Ely and the A14 from Ipswich through to Cambridge.
